Ballantrae Neighborhood

If you’re looking for a home in the Birmingham area, you need to check out Ballantrae. This neighborhood is located in Pelham, Alabama. Ballantrae is a Scottish themed neighborhood built in 2003, and it is still expanding! So if you’re looking for new homes or lots to build on, Ballantrae can be your next neighborhood.

Ballantrae is mainly known for its grand Scottish castle Clubhouse on its 18 hole championship golf course. The neighborhood is luxuriously spaced over 4.5 miles. While located in Pelham, Ballantrae is also close to Alabaster and Chelsea. You can get to Ballantrae through the front entrance of Weatherly and Olde Weatherly.

The name Ballantrae comes from a community in Scotland and it means ‘town by the beach’. While this isn’t a beach community, the golf course which is Ballantrae’s highlight definitely brings that resort feeling to the entire neighborhood.

Ballantrae Location

Ballantrae is located east of I-65 in Pelham, South of Birmingham. The neighborhood is nestled behind Olde Weatherly and offers its residents a quiet and tranquil area to call home. The drive through Ballantrae is a peaceful one, with rolling hills and curves, and plenty of trees to make it feel like you’re driving out of the city and into the country.

While Ballantrae may feel remote, it is in very close proximity to shopping and restaurants. A close by favorite is Colonial Promenade Alabaster, a shopping center conveniently located next to Ballantrae and Olde Weatherly residents. There are also a few shops and a popular restaurant, Joe’s Italian, located at the entrance of Weatherly. We will cover more of the close by areas in the last section of this post.

All of the neighborhoods in Ballantrae have a 35124 zip code. Pelham located in Shelby County and is a part of the Greater Birmingham area, being one of the most populated cities in the state of Alabama.

Living in Ballantrae

Ballantrae has 1,894 residents and counting! A whopping 92% of them are the homeowners. The nieghborhood has many amenities to offer its residents, including its well known golf course and pool. With Ballantrae’s location and all it has to offer, it’s no wonder that it’s a popular neighborhood for the Birmingham area.

The neighborhood is Ballantrae is a tight community. Ballantrae has its own magazine and the neighborhood has many events including Easter egg hunts, Christmas Eve visits by Santa on a fire truck, and Golf events at the Clubhouse. Many residents even go for breakfast or lunch at the Firehouse Grill located in Ballantrae’s Golf ClubHouse.

From a recent poll on Nextdoor, a lot of the residents have interests in walking, hiking and trails, gardening and landscape, DIY and home improvement, cooking, BBQ & grilling, wine tasting, travel, dogs, and live music. Another poll showed the reasons why residents love living in Ballantrae. Residents love that the  neighborhood is family friendly, peaceful, quiet, clean, safe, well maintained, beautiful, and full of good neighborhoods.

Ballantrae is a large neighborhood with a lot of perks. It is known for its award winning golf course and is becoming recognized for its pool as well. The neighborhood also has its own fire station and fitness center for the neighborhood. Ballantrae is almost it’s own little city in Pelham.

The neighborhood offers its residents an escape from the hustle and bustle of city traffic, but don’t let its remote feel fool you, you’re still within close proximity to shops and restaurants. We will cover what’s the neighborhood is near at the end of this post.

Ballantrae Golf Course

The golf course at Ballantrae is truly like no other. It is the inspiration for the rest of the neighborhood, and a site to see. Ballantrae Golf Course was designed by the internationally known architect, Bob Cupp. It is an award winning course, including a 2005 award from Golf Digest as “The Best Affordable Public Golf Course” and being named the “#1 Clubhouse in the State of Alabama” by Architectural Digest.

Ballantrae Golf course is a semi-private course with 18 holes, with a par 72, and 7,310 yards. An 18 round game should take roughly 4 hours to complete at this course.

While the golf course is grand, the ClubHouse is the focal point. The ClubHouse includes a Conference Room, Golf Shop, and a Fireside Grill, which serves breakfast, lunch, and special dinners. The neighborhood pool is a popular one in the summertime. The pool is wheelchair accessible and located right next to the fire station. It is a Junior Olympic sized swimming pool that also has a pavilion available to be rented out for parties.

Pelham Fire Station 5 is the neighborhood’s own little personal firehouse! It is located right next to the pool on Ballantrae Club Drive. This firehouse stays within the Scottish theme of the rest of the neighborhood.

Ballantrae Fitness Center

This quaint little building used to be the front office, but it has been transformed into a fitness center for the neighborhood. So now you have a place to workout (and no excuses)! It keeps to the Scottish theme and is the first impression of the homes you will see throughout the rest of Ballantrae.

The neighborhood is also a great place to go for a walk or run, and you can take your pet for a walk as well! There are plenty of hills to get a good workout.

There really is a home for everyone in this neighborhood! Ballantrae offers starter homes, garden homes, cottages, houses on the golf course, and even larger castles! There are still plenty of lots to build on, so you can build your dream home in the neighborhood.

There are over 900 homes located in the neighborhood! The homes are all different styles, including English Tudors, Garden homes, and Scottish inspired castles.

As of February  2019, there’s exciting news of expansion! So if you’re looking to build your new home, it isn’t too late to secure a lot in this wonderful neighborhood.

Each neighborhood in Ballantrae crafts its own feel and design of home. Homes generally have the same square footage and price range within neighborhoods. The names of these neighborhoods go along with the Scottish theme.

Ballantrae School Zones

The entire neighborhood of Ballantrae is zoned for Pelham City schools. If you were to look for housing near the front of the neighborhood, which is still in Weatherly, then depending on which area of the neighborhood you’re in you could either be located for Pelham schools or Alabaster Schools.

For K-5 schools, you can choose from two Pelham schools: Pelham Oaks Elementary School or Pelham Ridge Elementary School. There is one middle school, Pelham Park Middle School, and one high school, Pelham High School.

What’s Nearby

Ballantrae residents are lucky, they have easy access to highways, shopping, and food! As mentioned previously, there is a nearby shopping center in Alabaster, Colonial Promenade Alabaster, that includes restaurants, shopping, and a movie theater. More stores will be built soon, so you’ll have even more to choose from in the 35007 zip code!

Also as stated before, when you enter Ballantrae through the front of Olde Weatherly there are several shops at the neighborhood entrance. These conveniently located shops include: Joe’s Italian, Blair-Pharmacy, Weatherly Animal Hospital, Park Place Cleaners, Turner Tax of Alabaster, and Jac & Dac Kidz Corner.

Outside of these close by stores, the neighborhood is also close to a lot of other activities in the community. Ballantrae is only 25 miles south of Birmingham, so downtown isn’t too far away. One popular outdoor spot is located nearby, Oak Mountain State Park. Oak Mountain has its own golf course, camping, biking, and hiking trails that you can enjoy.

Pelham city offers a racket club, recreational club, ice skating rink in the Convention Center, Alabama Hockey at the Pelham Civic Center and a Wildlife Refuge center. There is plenty to do in Pelham and the surrounding areas, making Ballantrae the perfect spot to call home. Since Ballantrae is located off of Interstate 65, you can jump on the interstate and go anywhere fast!

So there you have it, a preview of this beautiful neighborhood. Residents enjoy their solitude and the neighborhood amenities. While the neighborhood feels like you have been removed from the city, you can enjoy both the country feeling and city easiness with shops and restaurants close by.
